A Little Support Makes a Big Difference

Dementia affects close to half a million Australians and almost 1.6 million Australians are involved in their care.

Through Paynters Community, Health and Ageing sector, we aim to increase understanding about dementia and how to make a positive difference to the lives of people who are impacted.

Our intention is to partner with providers to develop community living environments to allow residents and clients to live active and fulfilling lives.

There are some great ways we can an all offer a little support through Dementia Australia, help support your organisation to become dementia friendly, support a local Dementia Alliance or individually you can support as a Dementia Friend.

As part of Dementia Action Week, we wanted to reflect on one of our key projects making a big difference in a small community.

Paynters undertook the design and construction of the Memory Support House at Beauaraba Living in Pittsworth. This facility provides a unique environment to support the specific needs of older people with cognitive impairment and dementia.

The unit is designed as a domestic ‘cottage model’ through two individual country homes with discreet back-of-house connectivity for staff and service access including storage, kitchen scullery, laundry and other utility areas. Each cottage provides a country style home for 13 residents, set within secure landscaped gardens.

The complete separation of the services and living spaces ensures a warm homelike environment without the disruptions associated with delivery of services and assists residents to maintain independence within an environment that supports safety and security.

The design also encourages residents to live purposeful lives, undertaking ordinary household tasks enabling them to maintain abilities and focus on positive achievements.
