Having successfully completed the delivery of Stage 1 & 2 of the Mater Private Hospital Townsville (MPHT) Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) project in July 2022, Paynters undertook the staged refurbishment of Stages 3 & 4. Stage 3 & 4 works encompassed the remaining medical equipment upgrade, mechanical system upgrade and services installation scope of this project.

The CSSD is responsible for cleaning, sterilising and taking inventory of more than 139,591 surgical items per year from 16 operating theatres and provide additional capacity to Townsville University Hospital on an as required basis. The CSSD is a purpose designed facility with distinct areas between clean and dirty where the work flows through several distinctly separated zones from the decontamination room to the packing area, loading of sterilisers, sterilising bay, cooling bay then storage and distribution.

Operating within a live hospital environment demanded an innovative approach to staging and construction methodology. A combination of strategic planning, containment solutions, and strict cleanliness protocols ensured that the build progressed efficiently while maintaining hospital operations without disruption.
